How to Convert Binary to Unicode Without Guessing

Unicode code point mode treats each separated bit string as one scalar value. For example, binary 100111101100000 is decimal 20320, or U+4F60 (你).

UTF-8 mode instead requires complete 8-bit bytes and validates the byte sequence. The emoji 😀 uses four UTF-8 bytes: F0 9F 98 80.

InputOutputMeaning
1000001AU+0041 scalar
100111101100000U+4F60 scalar
11111011000000000😀U+1F600 scalar
11100010 10011000 10000011UTF-8 bytes

Binary Unicode Scalars in JavaScript

Validate every token before calling String.fromCodePoint. UTF-8 byte mode needs a TextDecoder after grouping bits into bytes.

const point = Number.parseInt(bits, 2);
if (point > 0x10FFFF || (point >= 0xD800 && point <= 0xDFFF)) {
  throw new Error("Not a Unicode scalar");
}
const text = String.fromCodePoint(point);

Code Points, UTF-8 Bytes, and Invalid Scalars

A Unicode scalar is a number from 0 through U+10FFFF excluding surrogate values U+D800 through U+DFFF. Code point groups may contain 1 to 21 bits.

UTF-8 mode accepts only complete 8-bit groups. Truncated or malformed byte sequences produce a visible warning instead of silently inventing characters.
